There’s a great atmosphere inside the team; everybody gets on really well with each other. It’s a real family-run concern, and I’m working well with my team-mate Esteban Guerrieri and my engineers. That’s exactly what we need – for everyone in the team to be working well together with good communication.
The opening round at
Oulton Park was quite difficult for me. We had a lot of gearbox problems, which meant I spent most of the time in the pits rather than out on the race track, but you always get this type of thing with a new car and we managed to solve it. We haven’t encountered any problems with the gearbox since, which is great.
In round two at
Donington we knew we could be quick in the race. The first one didn’t go to plan – we were going strongly and trying to overtake a few of the Carlin cars, but I had a bit of contact which messed things up. Esteban drove a fantastic race, though, and finished in sixth position which was great for the team. We knew after that we could be truly competitive. In the second race I then managed to pull off a seventh place which made for a brilliant all-round result.
Ultimate is a brand new team working with a brand new car, so to be up there and fighting for points in only the second round as we were is a great achievement. The way we have progressed the car over the last few races is just unbelievable – in only our second race meeting in the series we scored points with both cars!
At the beginning of the season we were running nearly two seconds a lap off the pace. In only a few races we have managed to get that down to less than half a second and we are still constantly improving. In the last test session at
Snetterton we were consistently inside the top six by the end.
