In the weekend’s second race I finished fifth, which was very good and the best result in Ultimate’s short history. We had improved the car a bit in-between the races and I was able to pull out a gap over the guys behind me. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to follow the drivers ahead of me or try anything, so I just concentrated on getting into a good rhythm, keeping a good pace and remaining consistent.
I was happy for the team and for Mygale at their home track, and of course because we were racing in front of
Formula 1 teams and fans too. The guys really deserved the result, but we have to admit that at the end of the day over a single lap we are still not that competitive. Getting results like that is important for the atmosphere inside the team, but what matters most to me is creating a fast car.
The team has improved a lot over the year so far. It’s a solid team, we all work very well together and we are now starting to understand how to get the most out of the car’s potential. Everyone at Ultimate is doing a good job. The number of difficulties we are experiencing is coming down, and we must ensure we learn from them when we do make mistakes or encounter new issues with the car. I’m really pleased with the progress we’ve made, and there is still half the season left to go!
At Brands this weekend I’ll be aiming for a podium; if we have the pace and can make good starts again that would be a great result. Even if we cannot manage that, it will still be important to finish the races and score points. After that we will have some more testing and more development from Mygale, and hopefully by doing that we can find some more speed too.
I’ll catch you later,
Esteban
