It’s also important to oversee what the mechanics are doing. Not so much in F3, but in Formula
BMW last year, it was not only a training ground for the drivers, but also for the mechanics. It’s important to be on hand to give advice, guidance and make sure everything is done to a high standard. I wouldn’t want to be completely divorced from the mechanical side of it; my background is spanners not pens!
Q:
Carlin Motorsport has its roots in British F3, has won three championships and become the most successful team in British F3 history. How does it feel to be the new team manager?
Gary Bonnor:
I’m very pleased and flattered to have been given the role. F3 is where it all started, for both the Carlin team and myself. It’s very exiting to have the opportunity and I hope we’re able to sustain the high level of success we’ve had for the past nine seasons.
We’re already well into preparations for next season, and already have four of our drivers signed up. With a new F3 car this year, the team that gets up to speed the quickest and learns the characteristics of the car will succeed. Carlin Advanced Technologies and the wind tunnel should help us in that.
