Hitech: Sweet Sixteen.

Thursday, 20th March 2008

In the second Crash.net column for defending British F3 Champions Hitech Racing, second-year driver Max Chilton looks ahead to his first year with the team.

Joining the defending champions bring with it higher expectations and some added pressure, but I think high expectations are good as it means you push yourself more. If you know you aren’t doing as well as you should, then you tend to get annoyed and drive better. Of course, if can get to thee stage where you overdrive but I don’t feel the pressure will get too high this year and I can do what I want.

David has said he thinks 2009 is when me and Walter will be right at the front, but I’d love to get a win this year and I think I can do it. However, this year the aim is to be the top Brit in the championship. There are a lot of good Brits out there but I feel that I can be the top of the pile and that is my aim.

While the F3 season looks good, I’m not sure I’ll be out doing any sports-car racing this season with my brother – the Team Halfords BTCC racer Tom.

I loved doing the Le Mans Series race at Silverstone last year; it was a really good experience. However, it is too expensive for what it is and it isn’t what I am aiming for from my career so I don’t think there will be much more of that. It was great with the crowd, and doing such high speeds alongside ex-F1 drivers in the factory Peugeot was a brilliant day. It also helps that we finished well in fifth place. Driving the car helped my career as I feel you develop as a driver if you can do well in both race cars and single-seaters. It really helps to build the portfolio and shows people what you can do.

As far as going to Tom for advice goes, I do go to him sometimes but he races touring cars which is totally different to what I am doing. Touring cars don’t have much aero as we do for a start but he has his uses with certain things!
