Carlin: Taking steps.

Thursday, 8th May 2008

Carlin F3 driver Oliver Turvey made a name for himself at the first F3 race of the season in March, taking victory at the season opener at Oulton Park.

In this month’s latest instalment from Carlin Motorsport, the Racing Steps Foundation driver talks about combining racing with his studies at the University of Cambridge...

I have to admit that so far my first season in British F3 has been great fun. I’m getting used to the cars, which are really nice to drive. In terms of the racing – it’s pretty similar to racing in Formula Renault Eurocup or Formula BMW - your concentration levels, focus and determination remain the same whatever you’re racing.

Having raced in Formula Renault Eurocup last year it’s nice to be back in the UK on the British tracks. We have such a great selection of circuits in the UK which really do prepare you well for a career in the sport. Now I’m back on the tracks I raced on in Formula BMW, but also getting the opportunity to race at Monza, Bucharest and Spa. I think it’s a really good calendar.

Almost for the first time this year I’ve been able to complete a test programme over the winter. Throughout my career I’ve always struggled to get the funds together for pre-season testing - normally we just join the championship at the first race or after the season has started, but this year the Racing Steps Foundation has done a fantastic job which has allowed me to prepare for the season. When I went to Oulton Park I was prepared in every respect and I think it showed when I won the first race.

The Racing Steps Foundation has been incredibly important to me. Basically, the Foundation has been set up to help young British drivers that don’t have funds to move up the motorsport ladder, but have got the results on track. It’s always been difficult to raise money - when I raced in Formula BMW in 2006 we missed the first six rounds as I didn’t have the budget, but I still managed to finish second in the championship. Then I won the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award and my career has taken off from there.
