I’m delighted that the Foundation have put me with Carlin Motorsport, it’s a very competitive team with a good reputation. There are four International Class drivers at Carlin and three of us have already won a race this season. It’s definitely a good thing to have such good drivers as your team mates. For me, you want to have competition within the team – it all helps push you forward.
There’s a good atmosphere within the team and we work together very well. Obviously we all want to beat each other, but at the same time we want to be at the front, so it’s good to all work together, learn about the car and learn things from each other. That way we push the whole team forward and we can all be racing at the front. But I’ve always beaten my team mates and I’ll be aiming to do the same thing again this year.
One of the advantages of F3 is the amount of track time available. As a driver it’s great to be in the car as much as possible and do as much testing as you can. We put a lot of preparation into the first race of the season and worked hard on the development of the new car. So to cross the line in my first race and take victory was a great feeling.
The whole of the first race was great. I started from the front row of the gird at the first race of the season, and got a good start in the wet to get to the first corner first -which was what I’d be imagining since qualifying! Once I was in the lead, I just wanted to control the race. I was quite relaxed really and crossing the line was such a great feeling. It was a fantastic result for me and for the Racing Steps Foundation because obviously it was their first race as well. It was nice to able to reward their faith in me by delivering a victory for them straight away.
