British F3 is a very competitive and prestigious championship and it gives you a massive confidence boost to win a race so early in the season. I know I’ve already won a race so I know I can do it again. It just gives me the confidence to go out there and be at the front in every race really – to do the best job that we can.
Despite taking the win at
Oulton Park and finishing on the podium at
Croft, I’m aware that it will take a lot of hard work to win more races this season. It seems to be a very competitive year in British F3 this season. There are fewer drivers with experience, but there are a lot of very good rookies at the front. I think pretty much anyone in the top ten is in with a chance of winning, so it’s going to be a very tough year in the championship.
As well as competing for the British F3 title, I’m in my final year at Cambridge University where I’m studying engineering. Obviously with the exams I’ve got at the moment, and summer projects, it is hard balancing university and racing, but by making a few sacrifices in other areas and having good time management it’s definitely possible. I’m focused and determined to make sure I succeed in both my degree and in my racing.
I started my final exams just before Croft – I had five exams on the Thursday before the race weekend. The university was very good about it because I was meant to have the exams on Friday, but they allowed me to sit them on Thursday meaning I was able to test at Croft on Friday – although under the constant supervision of a Cambridge tutor to make sure I didn’t pass on any of the questions! The university have been very supportive. I’ve got another five exams before Monza and then summer projects that run through until June.
