Preview - 2001 and Silverstone.

Friday, 30th March 2001

In the Scholarship class two names have been consistently lapping well in testing and breaking into the top six. The first is Michael Keohane in his Meritus Racing F398 powered Toyota. He raced in the Formula Renault 2000 class with Manor Motorsport last year and this year has topped the times in testing on three occasions. Not to mention outpacing some of the Championship class in the wet.

His main rival will probably be Parker F3’s Robbie Kerr. Kerr was the Formula Renault Star Cup champion in 1998 and in 1999 and 2000 raced in the Formula Palmer Audi series - last year winning three races and coming home third in the championship. At the last test in Silverstone Kerr was the fastest runner and like Keohane he has been in the top six at most the tests.

Of course these aren’t the only two that look good in the Scholarship class. Performance Racing’s Matthew Gilmore and Fred Goddard Racing driver Robert Doornbos are also tipped to do well in 2001, as is Matt Gilmore in the other Performance Racing machine.

This season looks set to be fiercely competitive one with over 20 entries in each class and we won’t really know what is going to happen until the lights turn green and the chequered flag falls. Just remember though that this year races will be 20-minute challenges as opposed to 30 in 2000. Whatever though, enjoy the season and good luck to all those competing in the F3 championship.
