Q&A: Stephen Jelley.

Monday, 15th November 2004

It’s certainly been a learning year for Stephen Jelley, who started the season fresh out of Formula Ford and ended it with Formula 3 class victories at Donington Park, Oulton Park and Thruxton.

SJ
Well I’m certainly looking forward to next year. I think I’ll be alright. I don’t think you should enter a Championship unless you think you’ve got a chance of doing well in it. I don’t think I’ll be out of my depth at all and I’m looking forward to it.

What are the main things you’ve learned this year that you can carry forward into 2005?

SJ
There are thousands of things really, you learn so much in F3. The cars are amazing, they’re all so cool. Every time you go out in the car you learn something new. I don’t know another category where you learn so much. I learned more in one day testing an F3 car than in the rest of my career. There’s just so much more to them than anything else.

Looking ahead to next year, fill us in on what you hope to be doing?

SJ
I’m just finalising my plans with Mike Baker (Menu Motorsport). I’m going out to Macau next week to watch with Mike so that should be fun. When we get back the new car should be there so depending on when we get it, we’ll try and get out as soon as possible. If we can get out before Christmas that’ll be a bonus but if not then we’ll just have to wait until the testing ban finishes and then hit it hard with loads of testing.

Compared to this time last year, how much ahead of the game are you in terms of knowing what you’re doing and who you’re doing it for?

SJ
From where I was last year I mean its amazing how far you can come in a year. For example today I’ve driven a Formula 3 car for free and not a lot of people get that given to them. Compared to this time last year I wouldn’t have even dreamt of that. It was hard enough trying to find a Formula 3 car they’d let me get in, let alone drive it for free.

Thank you very much for taking the time to talk to us.
