“It wasn’t so easy when the hail stones came down, it was just a case of keeping it on the track and seeing what the weather does and eventually I got away and got in a couple pf clear laps before the safety car and after that I knew I had one of the backmarkers between myself and Asmer; I just to make a good start and that was it really,” said Conway of his race win.
Marko Asmer secured his second podium finish of the season for the Hitech team by finishing as runner-up, Asmer’s chances to challenge Conway after the safety car period being hindered by the National class car of Ricardo Teixeira ahead of him on the track for the restart.
“We need to find some more speed because I think at the moment I could keep second but not go for the first so I need to find some more speed and hopefully we’ll make a good start again,“ said Asmer after the race.
Carlin’s Alvaro Parente completing the top three on his return to the series, and reckoned he would have done better if he’d got away from the line in a better fashion.
“My start was not good at all, my clutch slipped a little bit in first gear and when I changed to second it stopped slipping and that was it really; we had pace but it’s really hard to overtake,” explains Parente. “I didn’t risk at all when it started to rain – I wanted to finish the race.”
However there was bad luck for championship leader Danilo Dirani who crashed out of the race following an incident with Dan Clarke. Having set the fastest time through the speed trap on the back straight, Clarke then hit Dirani at Tower corner - putting both drivers out of the race. Danilo wasn’t too happy afterwards.
Salvador Duran took the honours in the National Class after an epic mid-race battle with Barton Mawer and also for a time Josh Fisher, but Mexican Duran certainly had his head down and set the class fastest lap on the second tour.
