My job is more or less to shadow the number one mechanic. They have overall responsibility for the car and look after the major components on the car and, basically, the number two mechanic is on a learning curve and does all their work under the guidance of the number one mechanic.
Of course, we all play our part in getting the car ready for a race weekend, but there is a big driver influence when it comes to the qualifying session. They are the ones who have to go out there and put in a lap in a short space of time, so it is important I help to get the car ready for the session and then carry out any set-up changes that the engineers want to make.
Coming up to the race, my main responsibilities are to check tyre pressures, fuel, batteries and things like that. While I’m doing that, the number one will see to any set-up changes that are needed. Once qualifying, a race or a test session gets underway, the number two's responsibilities include the pit board so the drivers can get all the information they need while the number one relaxes!
