With Conway’s hard-earned advantage reduced to almost nothing and the track beginning to dry out, Senna began pressing his team-mate and Buurman, arguably the driver of the race, dived down the inside of Jarvis at Copse to steal third place with a supremely gutsy move.
The championship leader, though, had it all under control, and little by little started to inch away from his Brazilian team-mate again, as Buurman fancied his chances in third too.
Christian Bakkerud and National Class front runner Rodolfo Gonzalez tangled with the recovering Kennard on the final lap, but there was no such drama for Conway, who held both his nerve and his lead to the flag to clinch his sixth victory of the year by a comfortable 1.6 seconds. Senna retained second ahead of the impressive Buurman, with Jarvis and Walker crossing the line virtually side-by-side in fourth and fifth.
Following Gonzalez’s last lap misdemeanour, National Class honours went to Swede Martin Kudzak, who had started right at the back of the grid, in front of Juho Annala and Cristiano Morgado, who had driven much of the race with a damaged nosecone.
Speaking to
Crash.net after the race, Conway said: “Off the start the clutch just wasn’t there for me and when I released it, it spun the rear wheels which allowed Oliver Jarvis to get ahead of me into the first corner.
“I was closely following and out onto the back straight I got a good run on him. I passed him into Stowe and then passed Bruno too on the outside of Club. The car was just really hooked up, and I had no problems with tyre temperatures or anything.
“I had extended my lead to five seconds when the safety car came out which hampered me a bit, but I got a good re-start and had the pace to pull away again. Bruno was close on the first lap but I extended my lead again and on the last lap was able to ease off a little bit. It would have been nice to have got the fastest lap too but it was good to win.”
