Ho-Pin Tung claimed the Recaro German F3 Cup on the back of a seventh win of the season at the weekend, but left it to the least lap to ensure he took success in style.
The Dutch-Chinese driver started the second of two Salzburgring races from sixth position, but took the lead on the final lap to claim both victory and the title, despite needing only second place to guarantee the crown.
"I had a great race," the 23-year old enthused, "It's super to win a race starting from P6 and win the championship in style at the same time! Yesterday, I finished second so we changed some things on the car today."
Sixth on the grid was due to Tung being caught out as the fastest times were banged in late in the second qualifying session. Although he was on track, the JB Motorsport driver only managed a time good enough for the third row, having posted the second fastest time for race one at the Austrian circuit. Renger van der Zande claimed pole for race one, Australian rookie Nathan Antunes for race two, while Tung's only title rival - following Joey Foster's Lausitz accident earlier in the season - Ferdinand Kool claimed sixth and fourth for the two rounds.
"First qualifying was very close but, unfortunately, I didn't earn the pole position bonus point," Tung sighed, "Second place is a good position to start the weekend although, on this track, the starting position is not important. During second qualifying, I was very fast but couldn't improve my lap-time in the later stages - but I knew I had a great car for the race."
