By the slimmest of margins, Paul di Resta has secured his fifth pole position of the F3 Euroseries season to gain a vital extra point in his fight for the 2006 championship title.

di Resta, who led BMW Sauber F1 test driver Sebastien Vettel by 15 points heading into the weekend, extended his advantage by edging out Esteban Guerrieri by just 0.001secs. However, despite taking pole, the ASM driver said he was aware that anything could still happen in the weekend's two races as he looks to become the second Briton in succession to lift the crown.

“It was a normal qualifying, I just drove my laps as usual,” he said. “I could have been quicker, but there was no need. Being on pole-position again is nice. I am especially happy for my bonus point that I get for being fastest in qualifying. Basically, I am optimistic for as far as the title is concerned, but anything can happen.”

Second on the grid was the best result for Guerrieri since Oschersleben back in May when he qualified on pole position, and the 21-year-old Argentine was pleased to be back at the front.

“My car was good, I could improve from one lap to another,” he said. “This was the first time for us this weekend that we could drive in the dry, so we had to search for the limit. I am happy to be up front in qualifying again. Even though it took me until the season finale, it is never too late for a comeback on the front row.”

Rookie cup winner Kamui Kobayahsi edged out team-mate Giedo van der Garde for third as ASM dominated the front two rows of the grid, with Sebastien Buemi and Guillaume Moreau sharing third. However Vettel was only able to qualify down in seventh place, some half a second slower than di Resta, leaving the German teenager with even more work to do if he is to try and overturn his points deficit to take the title.
