Harald Schlegelmilch made the most of his inherited pole position to come away with a surprise maiden victory at the Nurburgring, holding off stern competition from Romain Grosjean.
Signalling a first win for both himself and his HS Technik team, who only made their debut in the Euroseries this season after success in the German Formula 3 Cup, Schlegelmilch earned his stripes with a thrilling tussle with Grosjean.
Getting off the line well, the Latvian made the early running but championship leader Grosjean quickly made his way up to second place from fourth on the grid and began to hustle the 19-year-old.
Nonetheless, despite several efforts by Grosjean to try and haul his way past, Schlegelmilch always had an answer to the Frenchman's advances and duly crossed the line 28 laps later to score a surprise first victory.
“I am overjoyed with my maiden victory in the Formula 3 Euro Series. The race was great fun, but it was very hard as well. Keeping the two title candidates Romain Grosjean and Sébastien Buemi behind me throughout the race was very difficult. It is really cool that I have made it!”
The top four were closely matched, with Sebastien Buemi finishing in third, duly dropping six points behind Grosjean in the standings, while race one winner Nico Hulkenberg was fourth less than two seconds away from the leader.
Dani Clos secured his second points paying position of the weekendi n fifth place, just ahead of Yelmer Buurman, who came back from a lowly starting position to prevail in sixth following a lengthy battle with James Jakes and Renger van der Zande. Maximilian Gotz was again the best of the Volkswagen-powered entries, albeit out of the points in ninth this time.
