Marko Asmer is the new British F3 International Series title winner after his only rival for the title, Maro Engel, crashed out of the opening race at
Croft.
Engel needed to finish the race ahead of Asmer to keep the title fight alive but saw his championship aspirations come to an end in the gravel at Clervuax.
That gave Asmer, who had made a fine start to the race from pole, the championship title on the spot as his 72 point lead could no longer be overhauled - even if he were to retire - as Engel could only score a maximum of 63 points from the remaining three races.
That proved to be an important factor for Asmer as, having led all the way, he was forced to park his Dallara-Mercedes on the 13th lap, meaning his championship success was 'celebrated' with only his second DNF of the campaign.
"It feels a bit wierd at the moment as I have won the title but I lost the race," he said. "I knew I'd won the title when Maro went off but I could tell there was a problem with the engine in the car.
"I'll feel more like the champion when I win the second race!"
