Despite the disappointment of retiring from the race in which he clinched the title, Marko Asmer was able to bounce back in style as he celebrated becoming the 2007 British F3 International title winner at
Croft.
The Estonian went into the weekend with a healthy lead of over 70 points over his only remaining rival Maro Engel and put himself in pole position quite literally to take the title by qualifying at the head of the field for both races.
The title was soon secured when Engel crashed out of the opening race at Clervaux following a coming together with Carlin team-mate Niall Breen but Asmer was unable to wrap it up in style when his engine failed while leading the race and put him into retirement.
However, Asmer then ensured that his title winning day ended on a high with a lights-to-flag victory in the second race as he held off Breen's challenge for a tenth win in 20 races.
In race one, they told me I was champion but I didn't feel anything! he told
Crash.net Radio afterwards. I knew Maro was out which was good for me, but maybe it would have been nicer if we had had a fight and I had won the race with him in second place. I had to keep focusing on trying to win the race as that is what I am there for and I got a good gap but then the engine started to lose water and oil. I knew I wouldn't finish but I tried to go as far as I could before it seized.
It's been a long time coming but this year we knew that we would be fighting for it for sure. I was quick from the end of last season at Macau and then during pre-season. The only worry was when we got to
Oulton Park and qualified in fourth place for the first race. I thought Shit, what has happened? We were quickest everywhere and now we are fourth'. However, I won the second race and took the championship lead and have never given it away.
