Briton on verge of successive championship seasons after V6 Asia opener at Zhuhai.

Britain's James Winslow needs just a single point from the final round of the Formula V6 Asia series to claim the championship title at Zhuhai.

The Opes Prime Team QI-Meritus driver qualified second to series interloper - and former GP2 driver - Hiroki Yoshimoto and wisely decided not to chase victory once the Japanese driver established himself at the head of the race.

With Yoshimoto holding an F1 superlicence and thus unable to score points, the tactic proved fruitful as Winslow added a victory haul to the bonus for pole, also taking fastest lap for good measure.

The weekend is being billed as a head-to-head between the Briton - last season's Asian F3 champion - and closest rival Armaan Ebrahim, but Winslow had the Indian's measure in race one. Ebrahim completed the podium trio, but crossed the line two-and-a-half seconds adrift of the Meritus man.

With the finishing order setting the grid for the twelfth and final round of the season on Sunday, Winslow - who has his sights set on Champ Car next season - will start ahead of his rival but, with Ebrahim having already shown himself capable of both pace and the occasional robust move, nothing is settled as the pair chase the recently-confirmed prize of a test drive in next week's World Series by Renault test at Paul Ricard.
