Two fairytale results at Oran Park have helped to run around the fortunes of both James Winslow and Leanne Tander after tough obstacles were put in their way in the run up to the event.
Winslow assumes the lead of the championship after twice finishing on the podium, despite thinking his year might be over after the collapse of sponsor Opes Prime and the loss of his BRM seat, while Tander bounced back from two accidents in recent rounds to move into fourth overall for the season.
Holding second in the championship after the last round in Adelaide, Winslow fought hard to seal a one-round deal with Sam Astuti to drive Marko Asmer's British F3 Championship-winning Dallara F307 from last year, and the persistence reaped rewards when he finished second in race one and then won race two.
It was Tander, however, who kicked off race day with victory, scoring her third F3 win and continuing the recent trend of female success, following Danica Patrick's recent success in the IndyCar series and Simona de Silvestro's win in the Atlantic Series at Long Beach.
I think the stars are aligning for women in motorsport! a relieved Tander said after race one, It was the best start I think I have ever made, and I was able to get in front when [polesitter] Neil [McFadyen] stalled. From there, I only had to hold them off because it's so hard to pass here. In the end, I was able to pull a bit of a margin before the safety car came out.
It's really nice to win here at my home track and bounce back from the dramas we had at Clipsal and here [in testing] on Friday. Like last year, we need to win to get into the championship fight, but we did it today. I'm looking forward to Mallala."
Winslow finished second after starting fourth, whilst Nathan Caratti slipped one position to finish third. McFadyen recovered from his stall at the start to finish fifth, behind a strong Mat Sofi, after a solid recovery drive.
