Jon Lancaster endured a frustrating start to the weekend at Mugello after gearbox problems hit his challenge during qualifying for the second round of the F3 Euroseries in Italy.
The ART Grand Prix man, looking to kick-start his campaign following his hefty shunt in the season opener at Hockenheim, had been on the pace during Thursday testing ahead of his Mugello debut but then suffered a gearbox problem in the all important qualifying session that left him down in 22nd place.
However, despite the disappointment of seeing his challenge derailed, Lancaster said he remains confident going into the two races over the course of the weekend.
“It's unfortunate that we had a technical problem in qualifying but it's just one of those things,” he said. “The Mugello track is fantastic though, I'm really looking forward to the race although it's going to be a tough challenge starting so far down.
“After the performance in free practice, we had the capability of qualifying in the top five I'm sure. So I'm fairly confident of being on the pace during the race tomorrow. The aim will have to be to finish eighth, which would put me on pole position for the second race on Sunday.”
