Having taken his second pole position in qualifying at Rockingham, teenager Max Chilton secured his second podium finish of the British F3 International Series season in challenging conditions at the Northamptonshire circuit.
Chilton had qualified on pole for race one but lost out at the start to Atte Mustonen for the lead and gradually slipped behind both Jaime Alguesuari and Marcus Ericsson as the race went on.
Despite taking a trip round the oval on two occasions, Chilton managed to come home in fourth place to add vital points to his championship total.
Chilton however was able to go one better and break onto the podium in race two as he came home in third place having run in a top three position throughout the race
“I didn't get a great start in race one as I was on the dirty side of the track,” he said. “I didn't have a very good first few laps either. Then Ericsson went down the inside of me on the entry to the hairpin and I started locking up so I ended up going onto the oval.
“The second race went really well. I didn't really have any pressure which is always a plus as you can focus better and in the greasy conditions like we've had today, you've really got to focus. At the start I could have gone for the lead but I thought I was going to be pinned against the wall so I decided to settle for third and that was pretty much it for the rest of the race.”
Team-mate Walter Grubmuller had quailed sixth in the opening race and ran as high as fourth mid-way through the race before he was shuffled back down the pack to take the flag in ninth place.
However, he was able to make up places in race two after starting down in 17th and took 13th at the finish for a double points scoring finish.
“The start for race one was excellent,” he said. “I was right up to fourth, but I made a couple of mistakes in the laps that followed which dropped me down to ninth. The last few laps were really slippery and it was simply a case of trying to keep it on the track.
