Nico Hulkenberg has taken his second win of the F3 Euroseries season with a lights-to-flag victory in the opening race of the weekend at the Norisring.
Having qualified on pole position, the
Williams F1 test driver dominated proceedings when Mika Maki was forced out of the race on the opening lap. Maki had briefly got ahead of Hulkenberg off the line before outbraking himself into turn one and was then involved in contact with Jules Bianchi which forced both drivers into retirement.
From that point onwards, Hulkenberg was never headed and he pulled out a lead of more than six seconds by the end of the race ahead of Manor Motorsport's Koudai Tsukakoshi and Jean-Karl Vernay the latter taking to the podium for the first time this year.
Today, it is a great day for me with this perfect result, Hulkenberg said. I have scored many points. It would be perfect when I could also score many points tomorrow. Of course, now I am happy. The team gave me a perfect car again. The experience of my ART team just becomes clear, they have been unbeaten here at Norisring since 2005.
Points leader Edoardo Mortara was fourth and maintains the championship lead ahead of Hulkenberg who jumped up to second place with his victory.
Jon Lancaster led the rookie challenge with fifth place, with Christian Vietoris securing sixth place despite starting near the back of the field following an accident in qualifying. Rob Wickens, Erik Janis, Henkie Waldschmidt and Renger van der Zande rounded out the top ten.
