Christian Vietoris has denied Nico Hulkenberg a fifth pole position in six attempts for the latest round of the Formula 3 Euroseries at the Nurburgring in Germany.
The first non-ART Grand Prix driver to top qualifying this season, Vietoris swept to the head of the timesheets in the latter stages of the session to secure his first ever Euroseries pole.
Vietoris will be eyeing a second victory following his maiden triumph at Norisring last month, not least because he comes to the Nurburgring keen to make up for a non-scoring weekend at Zandvoort.
Hulkenberg will start alongside Vietoris as he gets a second chance to make headway on Edoardo Mortara's championship lead. The German driver would be up with the Italian had he not been disqualified from his win in Holland, but with Mortara well down in 21st position, he has a chance to make amends this weekend.
Beyond the top two was arguably the star of the session, Tom Dillmann. Returning to the Euroseries after being dropped by SG Formula earlier this season, the Frenchman is racing for the little-heralded Jo Zeller Racing outfit this weekend.
Quickly settling into his surroundings, he will start alongside countryman Jules Bianchi, who led much of the qualifying session before being bumped down to fourth in the latter stages. Mika Maki starts fifth in the second of the Mucke machines, ahead of James Jakes and Zandvoort winner Renger van der Zande.
As well as Dillmann, there was also an impressive performance from Daniel Ricciardo, who is making his Formula 3 debut this weekend with SG Formula. Looking for some additional racing experience, the Formula Renault Eurocup leader, will start from eighth on the grid.
Robert Wickens, meanwhile, continued to show well as the best of the Volkswagen contingent on a day when the Wolfsburg marque was comprehensively out paced by Mercedes. Indeed, beyond Wickens, no other Volkswagen-engined car will start inside the top twenty.
