Austrian ace Philipp Eng confirms position as leading FBMW runner in Valencia showpiece.

The German champion had been among the big name casualties of the World Finals format, retiring on lap one of heat one, but was battling his way back from eleventh on the grid and lapping as fast as anyone. Although Legris was not intentionally backing Wittmann into the clutches of his countryman, two quickly became three.

But not before the order had changed, however, as Wittmann made a decisive move around the outside of the Briton at turn one. Klingmann soon followed suit, Legris unable to resist as his tyres lost grip, but not prepared to give up without a fight, the pair coming close to tangling around the very spot where Klingmann went off on Saturday.

Braking to avoid contact, the Briton then found himself in the clutches of the chasing group, headed by Sebastian Saavedra and containing Kevin Mirocha, Carlos Huertas and Daniel Campos-Hull. Saavedra took a look at fifth spot, but was persuaded to back out, dropping him into the clutches of his closest rivals and allowing Legris breathing space that he maintained to the flag.

The field had lost three further runners by that stage, Mathijs Harkema and Britain's Adam Butler going off either side of a heavy shunt for Daniel McKenzie, who found himself forced off the road between turns one and two, leading to right frontal damage for the Fortec car.

Once Legris had rebuffed Saavedra, the field became somewhat strung out, with only the recovering Gutierrez appearing to make progress. Henry Arundel and Adrien Tambay were locked in close combat behind the Saavedra group for several laps before the Frenchman had a moment and dropped back into the pack, completing a disappointing weekend.

Unchallenged, Eng had just to keep it together until the end, and showed the composure that has marked his entire event to come home nearly four seconds clear of the chasing Kral, with Wittmann another five seconds behind the Czech.

Only in parc ferme did the winner show any real emotion, the realisation of a dream reducing him to tears.
