BMW UK front-runner Oli Webb has moved up another gear on the single-seater ladder by signing up to compete with the highly-experienced, championship-winning Fortec Motorsport outfit in Formula Renault UK in 2008.
Webb finished ninth in his rookie Formula BMW UK campaign with Carlin Motorsport this year, having made the step-up from T-Cars in which he had finished third overall in 2006. What's more, the 16-year-old picked up the coveted 2007 Formula BMW Student of the Year accolade.
Following a promising 2007/08 Formula Renault Winter Series baptism with Fortec – putting the off-season series to good use to acclimatise to the Formula Renault machine, which has more power and downforce than his more familiar Formula BMW mount – Webb needed little persuasion to sign up for the 2008 campaign too, when he has his sights set firmly on a strong championship finish.
“Fortec obviously have the credentials as a championship-winning team in the series,” the delighted Knutsford ace enthused, “but that is not the only factor in choosing them. I was impressed with the whole set-up of the team, and they immediately made me feel comfortable and one of them. We are going to work hard together next season, and I am hoping for a top six finish and targeting the Rookie Cup.”
Webb's season will roar into life at
Brands Hatch on 29 March, where he will be hoping his recent experience will give him the start he needs in the ultra-competitive category.
