Fortec Motorsport was started in 1989 by David Balfe. The team contested in the FIA Formula 3000 championship between 1999 and 2001before winning both the Marlboro Masters F3 race and the British Formula Renault Championship in 2002.

Fortec won the Formula BMW UK Championship Team Trophy in 2005, finishing second in the Drivers’ Championship with Sam Bird. The team returned in 2006 to take a full sweep taking the Team Trophy with Niall Breen and Henry Arundel claiming the Drivers’ Championship and Rookie Cup respectively.
