Mugello 2006: Surprise win for Race Alliance.

Sunday, 17th September 2006

Aston Martin claimed their first outright victory of the season in the seventh round of the FIA GT Championship, after Karl Wendlinger and Philipp Peter took their Race Alliance DBR9 to a surprise win at Mugello.

The BMS Aston Martin of Fabio Babini and Christian Pescatori claimed fifth, ahead of the sister Phoenix DBR9 of Andrea Piccini and Jean-Denis Delatraz. The final GT1 runner was the GLPK Corvette in seventh place.

Although a Porsche victory in GT2 is traditionally nothing new, Ebimotors victory at Mugello with Emmanuel Collard and Luca Riccitelli was still landmark as it signalled an end to the monopoly Ferrari have exerted on the class all season.

Making the most of the 911's legendary ability to perform well in the wet, Collard and Riccitelli claimed a surprise eighth overall, having run as high as fourth at times.

Jamie Melo and Matteo Bobbi claimed second in class to move clear in the GT2 standings, with Tim Sugden and Iradj Alexander-David in a satisfying third place. Pole sitter Nathan Kinch and Andrew Kirkaldy saw their pole position come to nothing when the latter driver pitched the 430GT into the wall at the start.
