Zakspeed finally did what they have been threatening to do in recent races by claiming their second victory of the
FIA GT season at the Hungaroring with a simple lights-to-flag victory.
Caught out by various issues in Dijon and Mugello despite proving arguably one of the fastest packages out there, Jarek Janis, Sascha Bert and Andrea Montermini did not put a foot wrong, triumphing with relative ease in their
Saleen around the tight and twisty Hungarian circuit.
Leading away from the BMS Aston Martin of Matteo Malucelli and Fabio Babini, the Zakspeed trio gradually pulled away from their Italian rivals to win by over ten seconds after two hours of racing.
It had looked as though BMS were heading for their best result of the season, only to be overtaken towards end of the race by the GLPK Carsport Corvette, with the Aston duo having to settle for third by the chequered flag.
Andrea Piccini and Jean-Denis Delatraz followed their BMS cousins in their Phoneix Aston, ahead of the top Maserati of championship leaders Andrea Bertolini and Michael Bartels, the large MC12 struggling the Hungaroring's
twists and turns.
The second BMS Aston of Fabrizio Gollin and Miguel Ramos led home the second Maserati of Jamie Davies and Thomas Biagi, but only after they had to fight their way past the Lamborghini Murcielago of Peter Kox, Benjamin Leuenberger
and Christophe Bouchut, the trio running as high as fifth before slipping back in the under-developed All-Inkl.com entry.
Despite their lacklustre performance on race day, Vitaphone Maserati have nonetheless secured the team championship, a feat they can share with AF Corse after the GT2 squad did enough to give themselves a big enough buffer from their rivals to take the title.
Not that they were able to celebrate in style though either after Andrew Kirkaldy and Nathan Kinch converted Scuderia Ecosse's seventh straight pole position into a dominant victory, with AF Corse filling second and fifth.
Between them the second Ecosse
Ferrari and the JMB Ferrari filled third and fourth.
