Gigawave Motorsport driver Philipp Peter has admitted that there is increased pressure on the British team as it prepares for its first full season in the
FIA GT Championship.
The team will run in two classes during the 2008 season, with Peter joined by Allan Simonsen in the GT1 class Aston Martin DBR9 and Luke Hines and Martin Rich set to join the grid in a new GT2 Aston Martin Vantage later in the campaign.
Gigawave will be the only British team in the GT1 class when the season kicks off the with the annual RAC Tourist Trophy at
Silverstone next weekend and while he admitted he was looking ahead to the opening round of the year, Austrian racer Peter said that there was extra pressure on the team.
“It's true that there is some pressure, especially being the only British team in GT1, being a new team and racing at home,” he said. “But I think it's good to have pressure; we know it will be hard but I think there is pressure on everyone for the first race of the season. More specially, I would have to say that I am curious – curious to see where we stand, especially as Silverstone is a very different circuit from Monza.
“I know the Tourist Trophy is a very prestigious trophy, and something very special to win. But it is not the sort of thing you think about when you are actually racing. You are out there to do the best you can. You only really realise what something like that means when you've actually done it. When you're standing on the podium, or see your name listed, or engraved, then you realise what it really means. And that is very special indeed.”
Peter added that he expected a tough season as the campaign progresses with a strong field already assembled for the year ahead and a number of teams in a position to challenge for honours.
