Crash.net preview - Istanbul.

Friday, 25th August 2006

The GP2 Series returns from its late summer break with both the drivers’ and teams’ championship titles still there for the taking as the 26 drivers gear up for the tenth and penultimate double-header of the season.

In the teams’ championship, ART Grand Prix leads the way on 143 points, but iSport International is now just 50 behind, on 93, after Glock and Viso began scoring in tandem in Germany. The pair may not necessarily get along, but have the potential to whittle away the deficit should ART have an off-weekend. With 66 points remaining to be won by a single team for a pair of perfect weekends, it isn’t impossible for Paul Jackson's team to take the crown but, such has been ART's consistency over the season, that the French squad is looking odds-on for a repeat of its 2005 championship.

ART needs to leave Istanbul with a 33-point lead over the second-placed team - and it may not be iSport given Piquet's personal resurgence - in order to be able to claim the crown, but it’s not just a two-way fight. Piquet Sports may lie third in the battle, and could steal the title if fate intervenes. Stranger things have happened....
