The man responsible for Premat's near miss, by dint of fending the Frenchman off in Bahrain's finale, currently holds fifth place overall in 2006, but is far from secure in that spot. A disappointing Istanbul weekend saw Ernesto Viso return home empty-handed, but the Venezuelan's cause was helped by similarly low-scoring outings for Gianmaria Bruni, Jose Maria Lopez and Giorgio Pantano, which allowed Adam Carroll to enhance his chances of claiming a top five spot. Viso, on 42, and tenth-placed Nicolas Lapierre are divided by 16 points with a maximum of 20 on offer this weekend, which Bruni, making his last GP2 appearance this weekend, is nine points adrift of the iSport driver.
The teams’ championship has already been decided in ART's favour for the second season in a row, but the battle for runners-up spot remains to be settled, with Piquet Sport and iSport International enjoying a see-saw struggle that currently favours the Brazilian outfit by just three points. That scrap, at least, should go right to the wire.
