Monza 2007 - Duran surges to maiden win.

Sunday, 15th April 2007

The newly introduced reverse grid system threw up another maiden winner from the second World Series by Renault race of the weekend at Monza when Salvador Duran cruised to victory on his debut for reigning champions Interwetten Racing.

Clashes for Iaconelli, Alvaro Barba and Pasquale di Sabatino ruled them out of the running for points, while race one podium winner Bonanomi was already dropped out of contention when he was slapped with two drive-through penalties; one for cutting a chicane and the second for crossing the white lane on the exit of the pit lane too.

Although battles raged down the field, the crowd were being most captivated by the battle for third between Carlin Motorsport duo Vettel and Aleshin, with the quicker Russian tucked up behind the German and unable to pass. However, with only one lap to go, Aleshin made a failed attempt to pass Vettel, the two instead colliding. However, while Vettel held his nerve to cross the line third, Aleshin was instead left licking his wounds as he slipped down the field.

Duran though held on for something of a surprise victory for Interwetten, finishing a comfortable 2.6secs up on Pavlovic, who was unable to close the gap on his rival in the closing stages.

“I had a difficult time in qualifying, but I felt more confident after the first race. The chance to start from the front row was obviously a big help. The car was perfect and I had to push from start to finish in order to stay in front.”

Vettel came home a rather battle scarred third, the German admitting he was unsure as to what his team-mate was trying to achieve with his banzai last lap move.

“I was short of a bit of speed this weekend, but we have managed to pick up some good points for the championship. I held on desperately to third place – the race was long with Mikhail just behind. The ‘push-to-pass' system helped me to hold him off. His overtaking attempt on the last lap was a little optimistic!”

Aleshin's demise helped Parente up to fourth by the finish, while it also helped him inherit the championship lead at the end of his first weekend with the Tech 1 Racing squad.
