Two rounds down and
Timo Glock is already making a break for the GP2 Series title, upsetting the rhythm set by two close-fought championships in the series first two years.
Okay, so Glock hasn't won any more races than his main rivals, but his consistency over the opening four rounds - three seconds and a first - have handed him a 13-point advantage as the rest of the pack squabbles amongst itself.
If the points table is ignored, however, GP2 continues to live up to its competitive billing, as four different drivers have taken to the top step of the podium in as many races, including one rookie, while four different teams have taken top honours. Some 15 different drivers have scored points, seven of them rookies, with nine teams already opening their accounts for the year. And the reigning champions are yet to finish higher than third...
As the only driver to have finished every 2007 race on the podium, Glock is already showing the kind of form that was predicted by many before the season began, as iSport International carries its end of 2006 momentum through into the early races of the new season. The British squad also leads the team standings at present, with
Arden International second and Super Nova third.
Their lead drivers occupy the same positions in the drivers’ standings, with Bruno Senna up into an impressive second early in his rookie season, and Bahrain winner Luca Filippi third, a further two points adrift. Filippi, like fellow Bahrain winner Nicolas Lapierre, endured a nightmare weekend in Spain last time out, failing to score in either race and allowing Glock to pull out his impressive advantage, as well as giving Senna the chance to ease into second overall. Lapierre is back in fifth, with Lucas di Grassi's pair of podium finishes in Barcelona lifting him to fourth.
If Filippi, Lapierre and Senna would not have been high on the list of early-season winners, just wait until Monaco when, as everyone knows, the unexpected
really can happen...
