I didn’t set the fastest lap in the second race because I hadn’t looked after the tyres well enough during qualifying which meant the car was sliding around too much, but it didn’t really matter because I still ended up winning the race. Two pole positions, two victories and one fastest lap – that wasn’t too bad. It was all a very good experience for me, and I hope it will make me even more competitive for the GP2 meeting there than I would be in a normal situation.
We had a GP2 test at Paul Ricard last week and improved the car a lot, but those changes were for Paul Ricard obviously. We don’t know if they will translate directly across to Magny-Cours, but I think we’ve made a step forward in terms of car set-up, which will be good for us for the rest of the season.
Throughout the test we worked on the flaws we had before. The car behaved nicely at Ricard, and it is not usually competitive there so I think that was a good sign for us and I expect us to be strong at Magny-Cours. My only concern is I have never been there before, so I will walk the circuit before the weekend and try to learn as much as I can about it before getting into the car for Friday practice.
I think it’s going to be a tough challenge; the championship certainly isn’t getting any less competitive so I’m going to have to step up and use that half-hour practice session to learn as much as I can, and then go into qualifying and try my best.
I’ll keep you posted as to how things go.
