Timo Glock returned to winning ways after four barren races by taking a comfortable victory in front of his home crowd at the Nurburgring in the opening GP2 race of the weekend.
Despite losing the advantage of pole position off the line, the iSport driver played a patient game to overhaul Lucas di Grassi during the pit-stops and go on to win by several seconds over the Brazilian when the order shook itself out. In the process, Glock not only bolstered his flagging championship lead, but also became the series' first two-time winner - after ten races - this season.
While Mike Conway stalled on the inside of row five, the rest of the field got away cleanly at the first time of asking, although Glock allowed himself to be jumped by front row partner di Grassi, with Giorgio Pantano only being denied a shot at the lead by opting for the outside of the local favourite. Super Nova's afternoon then got worse as Sebastien Buemi torpedoed title challenger Luca Filippi at the opening corner, the Swiss ART stand-in failing to get his car slowed sufficiently to avoid the Italian, who was clearly incensed by the move.
With the midfield sorting itself out, di Grassi led the frontrunners through the first few corners, with Glock, Pantano and Pastor Maldonado giving chase from
Kazuki Nakajima, Adrian Zaugg and Adam Carroll. Glock's iSport team-mate, Andi Zuber, was already in trouble, dropping to eighth, and the UAE driver's day would not get any better as he spent the first few laps fending off those behind. By lap six, however, the
Silverstone winner's bad luck had returned and he was out, having dropped alarmingly through the field.
