In the latest of his exclusive columns for Crash.net, GP2 series rookie and race-winner Bruno Senna reflects on a disappointing recent run of results, and looks ahead to turning the tide and getting back on the leading pace in Istanbul this weekend…
Magny-Cours was a pretty good weekend for me. It was my first time there, but the circuit didn’t take long to learn. It suited our car very well and that showed in the results, but obviously it’s not easy to be competitive everywhere. I was pretty happy with what we achieved there.
I have to say qualifying third on the grid for the feature race was a bit of a surprise, but when I sat in the car – even during practice when I wasn’t so high up the order – I was very happy with the balance and how it was behaving, so I knew if I could put a good lap together I would be quite competitive. If you look at my first sector from my fastest lap it wasn’t a very competitive split time – I had been quicker there on the previous lap – so I think we could have been even further up, but that doesn’t really matter. In some ways if I hadn’t been P3 it could have been me crashing into
Timo Glock or Andy Zuber.
I saw Timo didn’t have a good start; he took a very long time to react to the lights. I had a better start than either of them and thought I was going to make up at least one place from it. I was very close to Timo’s rear wing, but then I just saw him flying up in the air and thought ‘Oh God, what’s going on?’ so everything inside my head was focussed on trying to escape from the accident and fortunately I was able to avoid it.
