Istanbul 2007: Maiden win for di Grassi.

Saturday, 25th August 2007

Lucas di Grassi makes the most of Andreas Zuber's mistake to claim his first GP2 victory.

Zuber, di Grassi, Carroll, Pantano and Borja Garcia followed the best of those that had made their stop and were effectively the top five order.

Out front, Glock – and also the on form Negrao - attempted to place a ‘pit-stop sufficient' gap between himself and those behind, the two being aided by Rodriguez's stubborn attempts at holding onto second place from an increasingly irritated Zuber. Although Zuber, still comfortably set to take the lead of the race when Glock and Rodriguez inevitably pitted, could have stayed third, he instead attempted a risky manoeuvre on the Piquet Sports driver.

Trying to place his car down the inside of the Spaniard on the run up to the final complex, Zuber appeared to misjudge his speed, duly out-braking himself and pitching himself off the circuit, into the gravel trap and out of the race.

It left a thankful di Grassi in an effective lead, a spot he would assume soon after when Glock, Negrao and Rodriguez finally made their stop and dropped down the order.

The Brazilian was aided yet further by the feuding going on behind him, Carroll in second place attempting to valiantly hold off a feisty Pantano, the Italian attempting a myriad of manoeuvres around the Northern Irishman for several laps before finally executing the move at turn one.

Pantano duly set off in search of di Grassi ahead but ran out of time to make a difference, the Brazilian scoring a long awaited first victory for himself, while it also proves the first win of the season for double champions ART Grand Prix. Together with the constancy that has defined his season, di Grassi moves into the lead of the championship for the first time with only seven races remaining.

Pantano settled for second place to move back up to fourth in the standings, just a point behind his hapless countryman Filippi.

Carroll is another driver rocketing up the standings, his third place finish placing him sixth already despite having competed in just four of this season's eight rounds.
