The funny thing is after the race I said to Marcos it was a pity because he would have got a podium in his first season of racing, and he just smiled and said ‘You know, I’m happy that I got fourth place yesterday. We never expected that or thought I would get any points, did we?’ I said ‘No, but it would have been nice to get a podium’ and he replied ‘Well, that’s racing. I’ll get a couple of podiums next year, don’t worry about it’. I thought that was fantastic; he just didn’t let it fluster him at all.
Looking back, at the start of the season our objective with Javi was to try to get at least one win. What was the reasoning behind that?
Fernando Alonso, when he was 19 – the same age as Javi – raced in Formula 3000 and in that year he won one race, which for a Spaniard was absolutely fantastic and one of the things that got him into
Formula 1. Telefonica were really pushing and saying ‘this is the next champion, look what he’s been able to do’. So we thought we would like to get at least a win this year to prove that at the same age, Javi with less experience has been able to win too.
We really worked hard for that win, but then after that more wins came along, which was just all a bonus. We were really up on the season and I think as a whole it has been very positive. We were there, the car was on the pace and Javi was always running with the front boys.
