GP2 Asia preview: Sentul.

Friday, 15th February 2008

Hot and humid replaces hot and dusty as round two of Asia Series hits Indonesia.

"It is a real opportunity for me to get to know the team and the competitors, but also to get some experience before the main series starts," the Briton explained, "This weekend will be about familiarising myself with the team and the engineers."

Soucek's 2007 DPR team-mate, Christian Bakkerud, will also be looking to make amends for a disappointing Dubai weekend, in which he spun off early in the feature and then had to work his way through the pack in the sprint, eventually claiming only eleventh spot.

“It's the first GP2 race here in Indonesia, so we are all new to the track - and the forecast is rain and more rain for this weekend,” the Dane said. “Added to that, the track has around twelve different types of surface and we only get 30 minutes of testing before going into qualifying, which makes it extremely difficult for all teams and drivers to find the ultimate set-up. However, I'm lucky in that my Super Nova team was here last year with the A1GP series and they were quickest around the track with Team New Zealand, so we at least have a starting point."

After Dubai played host to two dry races, Bridgestone is taking no chances with the forecast this weekend and is prepared to see its Potenza wets in use more often than not. The sole tyre supplier has shipped approximately 640 dry and wet weather tyres to Sentul from its technical centre in Japan, with drivers permitted to use four sets of dries and two sets of wets for the weekend.

“With the warmer climatic conditions expected at Sentul, we anticipate that the drivers will get their hard compound tyres heated up more quickly than at the last round in Dubai," director of tyre development Hirohide Hamashima said, "This, in turn, should enable them to try several different car set-up options even within the relatively short time of 30 minutes allocated for practice. With regards tyre wear for this weekend, we expect it to be manageable, but the track surface is quite rough, so we will monitor it closely.”

Practice, qualifying and the feature race all take place on a hectic Saturday, with the sprint round following on Sunday.
