After a seemingly interminable break since round two at Sentul, the GP2 Asia Series reconvenes in Malaysia this weekend, joining the
Formula One circus for the first time.
While the break between races gave the majority of the field a chance to return to Europe in order to test the new 2008 Dallara in preparation for the forthcoming 'summer season', it is back to business at Sepang, with 25 drivers attempting to rein in current points leader Romain Grosjean.
The Frenchman has belied his rookie status to lead the drivers’ championship for ART Grand Prix, but knows that he has a tough task on his had after following pole position and two wins in Dubai with a more challenging weekend in Indonesia last month. Although he scored enough points to keep a safe distance back to his closest rival, Bruno Senna, the Brazilian iSport International driver is far from calling it quits.
At the wheel of the 2007 champion car, Senna is determined to put a tough start to the Asian campaign behind him and finally make it to the top of the podium, particularly as the GP2 category returns in front of the
F1 circus, to whom he served notice of his potential in 2007.
Adrian Valles, too, is keen to make an impression, having suffered a troubled first acquaintance with GP2 in 2006 and then limited outings with Spyker's test team last year. Since the launch of the GP2 Asia Series, however, the Fisichella Motor Sport International driver has been quick and competitive - both in races and summer season testing - and will most definitely be in the fight for the win this weekend.
However, the rest of the pack will be hoping to join him, with Sentul sprint winner Fairuz Fauzy, pole sitter Vitaly Petrov and
Red Bull prospect Sebastien Buemi all showing potential as they lie just a few points outside from the top three. Fauzy, in particular, will be keen to impress this weekend, as he returns to race GP2 in his homeland for the first time.
