Sepang 2008: Kobayashi comes good.

Sunday, 23rd March 2008

DAMS driver takes Sepang sprint race victory as Grosjean strengthens hold on championship.

Petrov continued to hold third spot, despite some late race attention from Valsecchi, who recorded his second points finish of the weekend for Durango, but the Russian managed to hold on the flag, and moved up to second in the championship as a result.

“I've had a great weekend here in Malaysia if we forget about qualifications..." Petrov admitted, "I tried my best to contain Grosjean, but I made a small mistake and he took the opportunity to pass me. After that, he was faster than me but, with one win and another podium this weekend, I’m now second of the championship. Fauzy is very close, Grosjean is not too far, so the end of the championship should be very interesting!”

With Valsecchi and Buurman having disposed of Puglisi to claim fourth and fifth spots, the battle was on for the final point. Unfortunately for Puglisi, however, the Piquet Sports car was clearly struggling, and he eventually had to let Fairuz Fauzy and the two iSport International drivers, Karun Chandhok and Bruno Senna through.

With three laps to go, Chandhok appeared in the mirrors of Fauzy, but the Super Nova Racing man crossed the finish line first to take his second score of the weekend and keep the pressure on Grosjean and Petrov at the head of the table. Senna had to settle for eighth, but took the bonus point for setting the fastest lap in the closing stages.

There was no more luck for either Luca Filippi or Adrian Valles, however, the Italian retiring after a spin on lap 19, while the Spaniard - who appeared on course to win on Saturday before being nerfed off by Sebastien Buemi - finished a lap down in 20th spot. Race one podium finisher Jerome d'Ambrosio failed to complete the opening lap, joining Jason Tahinci, Schlegelmilch and Buemi on the sidelines.

For Kobayashi, however, the afternoon provided a moment of history and helped return former F3000 powerhouse DAMS to the head of the podium for the first time since Nicolas Lapierre won in last year's regular season.
