Luca Filippi: Opening the account.

Thursday, 26th June 2008

In his latest column for Crash.net, ART Grand Prix driver Luca Filippi looks back at the GP2 Series weekend at Magny-Cours – and his first points of the year.

Because of this problem we were slow in qualifying, and it was the same in the first race, especially for the first half. We were struggling with the pace: we were just slow, although it was a bit better at the end because it is a bit easier to go as fast as the when they are struggling with their rears, and everybody is low fuel, so the level is the same for everybody.

So this was the case for in Magny Cours: slow, slow, and then the rain.

When I woke up on Sunday I saw it was raining and I was happy, because I knew that those conditions would give me a chance to prove my potential is better than what we'd shown before. During the warm-up I did two laps to warm up the slicks because I wanted to start with them, even if they were going to be very slow at the beginning of the race. I was thinking about last year when we had similar conditions in race two, and the circuit got drier and drier and at the end it was completely dry, so I really pushed for slick tyres.

I knew also that it would be difficult at the beginning, and it was: I was last or so and struggling with no pace because I had a full dry set-up. It was very difficult to feel the car and find the limit, but I knew it was a super strategy even when everyone was overtaking me. I was just waiting and taking no risks.

I knew it was the right decision because I made it, and I was happy with that, so I was just calm, maybe even too cautious because I didn't have a good feeling with a stiff car. It was good to do it like that and not make any mistakes, which would have been easy. When I saw a Piquet car and di Grassi come out behind me I said okay, now is the time to push, and I just went away and was fastest until we had the yellow flag.
