Q&A: Alex Lloyd.

Alex Lloyd celebrates his first victory in the Euro3000 series

Q&A: Alex Lloyd.

Friday, 21st January 2005

Alex Lloyd made a late entry into the 2004 European F3000 championship after his F3 plans fell through - and made an immediate impact with his front running pace. In this exclusive interview with Crash.net, Lloyd answers questions on his F3000 move, the benefits and limitations of winning an Autosport award, his options for 2005, testing a McLaren F1 car and much more...

GP2 would be fantastic to run in. It’s expensive and at the moment we’re trying to raise a budget and obviously there’s a limited time until the first test. There’s only limited testing so you’ve got to be in there from the first test.

But World Series would make a fantastic championship to fall back on. It’s a very reasonable price and there’s good races - including the support race at Monaco. So we’ll have to keep our fingers crossed for the next few weeks and month to try and raise the budget.

If we can get on the GP2 grid, fantastic, if not then we’ll aim for World Series. Whatever we do we’ve got to go in with the right opportunities and put a full championship together, win as many races as possible and go for a championship rather than last year where we were just going race-by-race.

Q:
As part of your Autosport Young Driver of the Year Award you recently got to test a McLaren. Tell us about the test itself and presumably you’ll also be looking for F1 testing opportunities with some of the established teams in the future?

Alex Lloyd:
Yeah the test was great. The actual running was very limited - I think we only had 12-minutes of running; two 6-minute sessions - so as McLaren said before the test, they weren’t looking for speeds or anything as they can’t judge a driver in such a short amount of time.

So really there was no pressure. It was just go in there - there were three of us - and enjoy it; get the full experience. We were lucky with the weather; December 1st at Silverstone isn’t always the best time, but it was lovely sunshine and dry. So yeah, just had a really good time and enjoyed the car.

It was so different to anything I’d ever driven before; I couldn’t quite believe how much of a step up they are compared with anything else. There was a lot different and it was hard to get used to, in such a short time, but yeah it was fantastic. I’ve got a taste for it now; I need to look around for any chance to get in an F1 car again. I’ll keep pushing to get the results and hopefully that will happen.
