This weekend's GP2 Series round in Hungary could see the first change of points leader since the opening round at Imola in April, as
Nico Rosberg continues to close inexorably on
Heikki Kovalainen at the top of the standings.
The Finn went into last weekend's Hockenheim double header 20 points clear of his nearest rival, but left Germany just six points to the good as Rosberg took the maximum marks on offer in race one - claiming pole, victory and fastest lap - before following up with fourth place and fastest lap to make another gain over his rival in race two.
The ART Grand Prix pilot showed that just one great weekend's performance for any driver, allied to an ordinary weekend for his rivals, could turn the championship on its head. But, despite the prominent positions adopted by Kovalainen and Rosberg to this point, any number of drivers appear capable of experiencing that 'great weekend' and could catch - and depose - the leading pair before the end of the season.
For the first time in this year's GP2 series, the Saturday and Sunday race winners at Hockenheim were identical to those from the previous round, at
Silverstone. While Rosberg took the spoils in race one, Olivier Pla once again showed that he had the mettle to keep the rest of the field at bay in race two to hand a second sprint event victory to the DPR team.
Elsewhere, the pointscorers were a mix of the usual suspects - the likes of Kovalainen, Alex Premat,
Scott Speed and Nelson Piquet Jr - and some new faces, notably Racing Engineering’s Borja García, who finally shook off the shroud of bad luck that had cloaked him since the beginning of the season. Ernesto Viso should have joined the Spaniard in celebrating some points, but the Venezuelan's misfortune continued when his car was deemed underweight, dropping the BCN machine to back of the grid for race two and handing Pla an unexpected pole position....
