The GP2 Series enters its final European phase this weekend with two races at the daunting Spa-Francorchamps circuit that could make or break the title challenges of the two men still in contention.
Heikki Kovalainen and
Nico Rosberg head to Belgium separated by just four points after the German inherited the fastest lap bonus in both events at Monza, adding the four extra points to a brace of second places, while overall leader Kovalainen racked up another victory in Saturday's feature race before struggling to fifth on Sunday. A repeat scenario this weekend would see the ART Grand Prix driver take the series lead for the first time - and Rosberg is confident that he can again be the fastest man on track as the championship returns to what he claims is a 'normal' circuit.
“Heikki had a good car last weekend, but I think things are going to change going to Spa and Bahrain," the German insisted, "They are 'normal' tracks, and Monza was a special track, where you run a completely different set up from scratch. He managed to get a good car, and he drove very well too, but I think things are going to get back to normal - like in Istanbul where he was 1.5secs a lap off. We will definitely have an edge on him - at least, that's what I expect, because I don't see them all of a sudden getting 1.5secs after a weekend.”
Rosberg has the added advantage of having raced at Spa before, whereas his title rival has only ever conducted test runs for the Renault
F1 team on a selected section of track, albeit the fabled Eau Rouge section.
