Crash.net preview - Imola.

Friday, 21st April 2006

The GP2 Series returns to the scene of its first ever race weekend as the class of 2006 prepares for round two at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari at Imola, looking to wow the F1 crowd just as it did the curious Spaniards who ventured to the Circuit Ricardo Tormo a fortnight ago.

Premat and Carroll aside, potential frontrunners looking to open their account this weekend include both DPR Direxiv pilots, Olivier Pla and Clivio Piccione, Lucas di Grassi and Alex Negrao - both of whom showed well in pre-season testing - and Tristan Gommendy, who put his Valencia track knowledge to good use in qualifying on the front row for round one but then succumbed to engine problems. Getting to grips with Imola, and its high kerbs, could be the Frenchman's biggest hurdle this weekend, although his iSport team ran well there last year.

BCN twins Hiroki Yoshimoto and Timo Glock, meanwhile, are expected to do well this year, but the Japanese suffered more misfortune in Spain while Glock continues to learn his way around a GP2 car after stepping back from Champ Cars this season.

All of which adds up to another intriguing GP2 weekend....
