The Piquet Sports driver will need to keep racking up the points too, for his rivals remain hot on his heels. Gianmaria Bruni is currently his closest challenger, sitting on 18 points after a feature race win at Imola that saw the Italian give Trident Racing its first ever victory, in GP2 and motorsport, in only its second weekend of competition. Team-mate Andreas Zuber has also shown himself to be on the pace, underlining Trident's potential.
Viso climbed to third in the championship by taking iSport International's first GP2 series win two weekend's ago, banishing a disappointing maiden campaign with BCN. The Venezuelan is level on 16 points with the two Arden International drivers, Nicolas Lapierre and Ammermuller, having also scored in every round this season.
Lewis Hamilton is sixth for ART Grand Prix, despite a non-scoring weekend in Italy that saw the Briton pick up a disqualification for passing the safety car. Campos Racing’s Adrian Valles is seventh overall, but also had a nightmare at Imola, stalling at the start of both races, and being collected heavily by Lucas di Grassi in the second. To make matters worse for the Spaniard, re-starting from the pit-lane meant that he was ineligible for the fastest lap bonus his subsequent performance merited.
The top ten is rounded out by the BCN pairing of Hiroki Yoshimoto and
Timo Glock, who both opened their account with scores in both races at Imola, and ART’s Alex Premat, who all have five points. The Frenchman can feel aggrieved, however, that he is not higher up in the standings after losing a certain points finish in both races in Valencia and then being taken out of race two by Ammermuller at Imola - under the safety car!
Piccione, meanwhile, returns to the 'ring pointless, having struggled to get his DPR Direxiv entry on the pace at either of the first two rounds. The Monegasque has already suffered two retirements inside the opening couple of laps, and only got his first finish - 16th - in race two at Imola.
