The GP2 Series heads into its final third with all still to play for, despite
Lewis Hamilton heading to Magny-Cours a fortnight ago with the drivers' title and a
Formula One seat apparently in his pocket.
Although none of his close rivals were able to win in France, a poor weekend for Hamilton meant that the likes of Nelson Piquet Jr and Alex Premat were able to carve into his points lead with podium results, setting up tense trips to Germany and Hungary over the next two weeks.
With seven events down and four remaining, the drivers' championship is still wide open, and with four very different circuits - Hockenheim, the Hungaroring, Istanbul Park and Monza - facing the teams boys over the coming weeks, the crown could conceivably go one of many ways..
After the thrilling encounters provided at Magny-Cours, there is no sign of the excitement waning as the season gets tight, and two new winners added extra spark to a season that has already seen a few new names on the top step of the podium. The men on the money right now are Premat and
Timo Glock, with the German timing his elevation to the pantheon of GP2 race winners just right as the series heads to his homeland. Following his move to iSport from BCN, the former Jordan
F1 pilot has out-scored everyone over four races, and moved himself into distant title contention by overtaking new team-mate Ernesto Viso in the standings.
Premat, too, is bubbling with confidence, despite not being able to take victory on home soil last time out. Two hard-fought and fruitful races at Magny-Cours, while ART Grand Prix team-mate Lewis Hamilton suffered a relatively low-scoring weekend, saw Premat close to within 22 points of the championship lead, with a maximum of 20 available at any given double-header.
