Racing Engineering team boss Alfonso de Orleans has criticised GP2 Series engine providers Mecachrome, after lead driver Adam Carroll suffered two engine failures at Hockenheim.
With a year and a half of racing and refining under their belt, engine problems have become rare in the GP2 Series but having had an engine failure in practice, de Orleans proceeded to complain that the new engine was provided very late prior to qualifying, leaving them little time to make set-up changes.
Furthermore, Carroll's hopes of a strong result in the sprint race were ruined by a water leak that caused part of the engine to shut down.
Having climbed to field to sixth place in the feature race, Carroll was started the sprint race from third on the grid but found himself labouring when the engine automatically switched to just 70 per cent of its overall power in a bid to stave off an overheating problem brought on by the water leak. With a lack of power, Carroll slipped back to eighth place by the finish and out of the points.
I'm really upset this weekend and feel we have been badly let down by Mecachrome, de Orleans said. You normally wouldn't expect two engine failures in a season let alone one weekend. It is not good for a driver of Adam's quality to have these problems. And with back to back races, there is no rest for the team or drivers. The next round of the GP2 series is this coming weekend in Hungary.
There was just nothing I could do, Carroll added. I didn't make any mistakes but I was slower through corners and on the straights due to the difference in power so my race was over before it had even started.
