Racing Engineering boss Alfonso d'Orleans Borbon was left fuming after another engine problem affected the qualifying efforts of GP2 Series rookie Sergio Jimenez in Monaco, leaving the Brazilian 21st overall.
While senior driver Javier Villa ran confidently, but affected by the traffic that marks Monaco apart from other circuits, before taking 14th on the grid, Jimenez was hampered by an engine problem arising, according to the team, from a failure in the unit as supplied by Mecachrome.
"We had problems with low oil pressure that started in free practice and stopped us from doing more than four or five laps," Jimenez reported, "We couldn't do some changes for qualifying, when we almost couldn't run. Now I'll have a new engine fitted for the race and I hope things go better tomorrow."
The gremlin prevented the Brazilian from defending his early position, restricting him to the inside of row eleven and leaving team boss d'Orleans Borbon to point to the amount of oil leaking from his car in
parc ferme as proof of his frustration.
"For Sergio, it has been quite disappointing as we already had similar problems with Mecachrome engines, so it's starting to be quite frustrating, especially because it is something beyond our control," he fumed, "At least Sergio was happy with the car's behaviour but, if the engine doesn't work, there is nothing we can do."
